Jerry Brown paints initiative campaign as taxes vs. schools

Gov. Jerry Brown has long sought to frame Proposition 30 as a choice between lower taxes and funding for schools.

To illustrate the point, Brown will kick off his campaign for the initiative Wednesday in Sacramento at -- where else? -- a school.

Brown will be joined by teachers and other school employees as he makes the case for temporary hikes in sales levies and a seven-year surcharge on incomes of $250,000 or higher.

A statement from the Yes on 30 Campaign on Tuesday said Brown would “discuss what the initiative means for education this year and ask Californians to take a stand to protect schools.”

The budget signed by Brown in June called for about $5 billion in cuts to schools if voters reject the measure in November.
