It’s been less than a week since he led the El Camino Real girls’ soccer team to its eighth City Section title in a row and Eric Choi is already back to coaching. Now he’s taking dead aim at another repeat, this time on the links.
The Conquistadores won the City Section boys’ golf championship last year and Choi’s team could be even stronger this spring. Unlike the girls’ soccer squad, which lost its first two league games before running the table, Choi’s ‘other’ team has started fast with victories over 6A League rivals Cleveland (last year’s City runner-up) and Granada Hills.
‘Yes, I’d make us one of the favorites,’ Choi said after the Conquistadores’ 198-215 victory over Granada Hills on Wednesday. ‘We’re young but we’ve got two of the best players in the City in our lineup.’
Sophomore Daniel Slovis has been the medalist in each of the Conquistadores’ first two matches and figures to be a strong contender for the individual title after a fourth-place finish last year. Senior Thomas Ludwig has qualified for the Southern California Regionals each of the last three seasons.
Rounding out the squad are four promising sophomores: Vincent Seapara (who shared medalist honors with Slovis in Wednesday’s match), Jared Legrand, Ryan Cienfuegos and Giovanni Washington.
‘We finished first ahead of Cleveland with a two-day total of 777 last year,’ Choi said. ‘We play in the toughest league and that prepares us for the City finals. In addition to Cleveland and Granada Hills, we’ve got Palisades, Taft, Kennedy and North Hollywood to contend with.’
Choi already has a hole in one this year and as he starts the back nine he’s hoping to add one more to his scorecard.
