Sophomore Henry Owens struck out 11 and threw a three-hitter to help Huntington Beach Edison defeat Los Alamitos, 4-0, Tuesday to clinch the No. 1 spot from the Sunset League after Anaheim Esperanza defeated Huntington Beach Marina, 3-2, in eight innings.
Edison (18-5, 11-3) gets the league’s top spot for the Southern Section Division I playoffs over Marina (20-5, 10-4) regardless what happens in Thursday’s regular-season finales because Edison holds the tiebreaker advantage over Marina.
Esperanza defeated Marina on Clay Shepard’s walk-off home run with one out in the eighth. Race Parmenter was a late scratch on the mound for Marina because of a bruised finger, but Austin Hill allowed one earned run in six innings.
