Elephants Rampage, Trample 5 in India

GAUHATI, India — A herd of wild elephants, lured by the smell of fermenting beer, rampaged through a village on Christmas, killing five people.
Prafulla Das, chief wildlife conservator of Assam state, told a reporter that about 20 elephants attacked villagers when they tried to drive the beasts away from barrels of homemade beer brewed from rice.
The incident occurred in the remote village of Joyfiddhi, about 100 miles from the state capital, Gauhati. Reports of the incident were not received until Monday.
Das said the battle between the villagers and the elephants went on for four hours, with the animals goring and trampling five people to death and knocking down about 10 mud houses.
