Washington — There are 191.2 million television sets in the United States, rapidly approaching three sets for every American home, according to the 1985 Television and Cable Factbook.
David Lachenbruch, editorial director of Television Digest Inc., which publishes the factbook, predicted the three-set average will be reached in three to four years because of “the proliferation of video peripherals - video cassette recorders, home computers, games, cable, video discs.”
The two-set average was reached in 1982. The figure is now an average of 2.3 sets per home.
After the United States, the Soviet Union has the most sets, estimated at 70 million. China said last year, for the first time, that it has 45 million TV sets.
