U.S. Oil Tanker Runs Aground

BRUNSBUETTEL, West Germany — A U.S.-registered tanker carrying 60,000 tons of crude oil ran aground today in the North Sea off the western coast of West Germany.
The 44,875-ton Kittanning, belonging to the Girard Trust Bank of Philadelphia, was underway from Scotland to a depot at Brunsbuettel when it went aground trying to enter the mouth of the Elbe River, maritime authorities said. They said that the accident happened in the early afternoon and that seven tugs were standing by to free the ship at high tide during the night. There was no report of an oil spill.
