U.S., Soviet A-Tests Inch Upward in 1984

STOCKHOLM — The Soviet Union and the United States both carried out more military nuclear tests last year than in 1983, Swedish experts said today.
Hagfors Observatory, run by a branch of Sweden’s Defense Ministry, said preliminary figures showed 53 underground nuclear tests last year, including 16 U.S. and 27 Soviet. The U.S. total was four higher than in 1983 and the Soviet total was up by three, the observatory said.
