The City Council has increased fines for traffic tickets and illegal parking.
The council acted in response to a recommendation by Police Chief James Carrington, who said the city’s fines were lower than those in neighboring cities.
Under the new ordinance, fines for running a red light and for parking illegally increased from $20 to $23, and fines for driving, parking or loitering on private property were raised $3 to $53.
The council also increased the penalties for three other offenses: the fine for hitchhiking jumped from $10 to $28, the fine for riding an unlicensed bicycle is up from $10 to $13 and bail for a traffic infraction that ends in arrest increased $3 to $203.
