Minorities Up at Berkeley
Underrepresented minorities are entering the University of California, Berkeley, in record numbers and then staying there, according to a university report. The university said such students now account for 21.5% of the freshmen class. The number of minority students is more than double what it was five years ago. Berkeley considers Latino, black, Filipino and native American students to be underrepresented at the school. Asian students, who make up 24% of the undergraduate population, are not counted. The university says its gains are in contrast to many other large universities, whose numbers of minority students have declined.
