WASHINGTON — The National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Thursday that they are joining forces to preserve the remains of the Civil War ironclad vessel Monitor.
The Monitor, lost in a storm following its famous battle with the Confederate vessel Virginia, rests in about 220 feet of water about 16 miles off Cape Hatteras, N.C.
The two groups said they are developing a plan to preserve the ship.
