MOSCOW — President Konstantin U. Chernenko marked his first anniversary as Soviet leader today out of sight but with a couple of letters published in his name, apparently to show that he is still at work.
Tass press agency carried two letters to peace groups signed by Chernenko--apparently to divert attention from the 73-year-old Kremlin leader’s seven-week absence from public view. Publication came just a day after Chernenko failed to meet with visiting Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, and Soviet officials conceded he was sick.
