Eddy Van Guyse, a physical education instructor at Cal State Dominguez Hills, has been named head of a new intercollegiate cycling team at the school. The team will be considered club level but will compete against about a dozen other collegiate teams from the West Coast. Dominguez Hills will host a meet April 6 and 7 at the Olympic Velodrome. The season will culminate in the West Coast Championships May 11 and 12 at UC Santa Barbara.
Van Guyse, a Belgium native, graduated from Indiana University in 1972 and was heavily involved in the annual Little 500 bicycle race that was the focus of the movie “Breaking Away.” Van Guyse also taught math in Chicago and was Illinois state cycling champion.
