The Nuclear Regulatory Commission this week formally rejected an appeal to shut down Unit 1 at the San Onofre nuclear power plant. Four of the NRC’s five commissioners voted against the petition, brought by the Sierra Club and the Southern California Alliance for Survival, which also called for the commission to hold a public hearing before permitting the unit to resume operation. The groups were challenging the commission’s November ruling to allow the unit to go back on line after a two-year shutdown for modifications to reduce its susceptibility to earthquakes.
