Greenland to Hoist Own Flag on June 21

NUUK, Greenland — This Danish island will fly a flag of its own for the first time on June 21, its National Day.
The Landsting, Greenland’s Parliament, voted Friday for a red and white banner in keeping with its inclusion in the Danish kingdom but decided to drop the characteristic Nordic cross.
The new flag will have a circle divided into a red half-sphere on top and a white half-sphere below against a background of white and red, to resemble the sun setting on a reflecting horizon.
Greenland’s National Day is the only one on which the Arctic sun shines 24 hours a day. The 840,000-square-mile island, which was granted internal autonomy by Denmark in 1979, is inhabited by 50,000 people.
