A 28-year-old Lynwood man who was shot by Gardena police after a market holdup was booked for investigation of robbery and assault on a police officer. Two men held up the Motoyama Market, 16135 S. Western Ave., around the corner from the Gardena Police Department. Moments later, a 10-mile pursuit began when a patrol officer spotted the alleged robbers’ car. The chase ended when the holdup suspects tried to ram the patrol car. The pursuing officer opened fire when one man pointed a gun at him, a Gardena police spokesman said. The suspect, identified as Wilbert Sims, was wounded in the arm and leg. He was reported in good condition at the County-USC Medical Center jail ward. The other man escaped.
