The Chicano Federation of San Diego County, during its 15th annual banquet Friday night, gave special recognition to the Los Angeles Times for its Pulitzer Prize-winning series on Southern California’s Latino community and to three local activists for their contribution to the Latino community.
Local businessman Mateo R. Camarillo; Maria E. Garcia, vice principal at Sherman Elementary School, and Latino activist Charles G. Samarron each received the community service award at the banquet held at the Embarcadero Holiday Inn.
Los Angeles Times columnist and editorial writer Frank Del Olmo was the keynote speaker at the event, which brought special recognition to the Times for its Latino series that was assembled by 17 Latino Times staff writers and photographers and which won the 1984 Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal for Meritorious Public Service.
