McBee, S.C., Team Scores Upset Over AAU Defending Champion Team Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Ricky Jones scored 26 points and had eight rebounds to boost McBee, S.C., to a 100-99 upset of two-time defending champion Team Florida Friday night in the semifinals of the AAU-USA 19-and-under Junior Olympic basketball championships.
Newark, N.J., nipped Detroit, 95-93, in the other semifinal to earn a berth opposite the South Carolina entry in Friday night’s final.
Kenny Dixon came off the bench to score 18 points for McBee and Rod Mitchell hit one of two free throws with six seconds left to clinch the game.
Team Florida’s Toney Mack scored on a last-second layup to complete a 39-point effort. Teammate Irving Thomas had 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Newark was led by point guard Ken Wilson, who had 22 points and five assists. Darrel Wilson added 21 points and eight rebounds.
Detroit’s Glenn Rice ripped the Newark defense for 40 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. John McIntyre missed a half-court shot at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.
