The movie was “Night of the Living Dead,” and there was a long line of youngsters waiting to buy tickets to the Oakland theater when suddenly a young man wearing a red beret shoved a pistol into the chest of one of those in the queue and fired a single shot. Leslie Howard Martin, 19, of San Leandro died an hour later in Highland Hospital. Oakland police Sgt. Dan Murray said the gunman, about 20, escaped by simply striding off into crowd. Motive for the shooting was not clear.
