CAIRO — Egypt’s Cabinet resigned today, and President Hosni Mubarak appointed former Finance Minister Ali Lotfi to replace Kamal Hassan Ali as prime minister.
The announcement was made to reporters by outgoing Information Minister Safwat Sharif after a meeting at which the Cabinet decided to step down after 13 months in office. The reason for Ali’s surprise resignation was not immediately made public. Lotfi was finance minister under the late President Anwar Sadat and is one of Egypt’s leading economists.
