A former Pomona College assistant treasurer who was charged with embezzlement Aug. 22 has repaid the college the $46,000 he is accused of stealing and is expected to surrender to authorities next month. Richard Hasse, 31, of Claremont, has been accused of taking the money in $1,500 increments over the past two years.

Monte Fligsten, an officer in the Los Angeles County district attorney’s special investigations bureau, said another employee at the college noticed irregularities on a credit card invoice sent to Hasse and notified police. Fligsten said his review of the college’s financial records turned up further evidence that Hasse had authorized another employee to write checks in the college’s name to Hasse and to a bank.

Hasse was vacationing in March when the irregularities were noticed, and was fired the next month. If convicted, he faces a possible sentence of four years in state prison. Fligsten said Hasse has made arrangements with the district attorney’s office to surrender Sept. 13 for arraignment in Los Angeles Municipal Court.
