31 Wounded in Soledad Melee

SOLEDAD, Calif. — Soledad State Prison remained locked down today following a night in which guards fired 10 shots to quell violence that left 31 people wounded, prison authorities said.
The melee erupted Sunday in a three-tier wing housing about 350 inmates and continued for 20 minutes before guards armed with batons and guns brought the inmates under control. Six guards and 25 inmates were injured.
