SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday it has seized a tugboat carrying 40 tons of marijuana, the force’s largest drug haul in the Caribbean this year.
The 90-foot boat and its cargo were seized 200 miles south of the Dominican Republic and were being brought to San Juan, a Coast Guard spokesman said.
Approximately 1,100 bales of marijuana were found in storage compartments on a 120-foot barge being pulled by the Zeus III, the Coast Guard spokesman said. The captain told the Coast Guard he was heading for Aruba, a Dutch island off the coast of Venezuela, from Cartagena, Colombia.
