Ben Testerman, the No. 2-seeded player, fought his way into the quarterfinals of the $200,000 Black and Decker Indoor championships at Melbourne, Australia, with a 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 victory over Lloyd Bourne.
The match ended on a somewhat angry note when Testerman’s cross-court forehand service return landed on the line and was called in. Bourne briefly disputed the call before trudging to the net to shake hands.
John Lloyd of Britain beat Larry Stefanki, 7-6, 6-3, at Cologne, West Germany, to gain the quarterfinals in a $119,200 Grand Prix indoor tournament.
The 70th-ranked Lloyd’s upset of the 37th-ranked Stefanki followed earlier eliminations of such favorites as Kevin Curren, the world’s eighth-ranked player, and Czechoslovakia’s Miloslav Mecir, ranked No. 11.
