Lomita : Low-Cost Housing Unit to Open

After a series of delays, tenants of Lomita’s new low-cost housing project will be able to move in before late December, a county official has promised.

The 78-unit project, Lomita Manor, has been under construction since last February. It was completed in late September, but there have been delays in opening the project, for senior citizens and the handicapped.

“There were many reasons for the delay,” said Mayor Charles Belba. “Rain and weather contributed, but mostly it was red tape and paper work.”

At a council meeting this week, a county spokeswoman told Lomita officials she has begun interviewing project applicants on a first-come, first-served basis for placement in the $3.5-million apartment complex. Letters of placement will be sent within the next two weeks, she said.

“We’ll be fully occupied by Christmas if I have to personally rent U-Hauls,” said Cathey Crider, a district manager of Los Angeles County Community Development Commission, which is overseeing the project.
