Manhattan Beach : Ride-Sharing Proposal Fails

A proposal to require all large employers in Manhattan Beach to implement ride sharing and other measures aimed at reducing business traffic by 10% during peak hours failed to win City Council approval Tuesday.
The proposed ordinance, which lost on a 3-2 vote, was supported by council members Gil Archuletta and Jan Dennis. Archuletta called the measure “a relatively inexpensive way to have government and private industry cooperate to try to alleviate the traffic problems that we all face.”
But Councilman Russ Lesser said the measure would create a new government bureaucracy without improving the voluntary van pool and ride sharing efforts many companies already have.
Representatives of Hughes Aircraft Co., TRW and Coldwell Banker all spoke against the mandatory transportation program.
