Irvine : Journalist to Speak on South Africa ‘Tragedy’

South African journalist and author Donald Woods will speak on “Apartheid and the Continuing Tragedy of South Africa” at 8 p.m. Nov. 20 in UC Irvine’s Science Lecture Hall.
A fifth-generation white South African, Woods escaped from his native country after being placed under house arrest for journalistically criticizing the death of black South African leader Bantu Stephen Biko. Woods was the author of Biko’s biography, and after its publication, Woods was forbidden to write or speak in public.
Woods escaped South Africa by disguising himself as a priest. He now lives in London, where he is a special adviser to the organization that oversees the British Commonwealth of Nations.
The escape of Woods and his family from South Africa was the subject of a recent British television documentary, and his books will be the basis of a forthcoming motion picture.
His talk at UCI is being sponsored by by the campus Office of Arts and Lectures and the University Center Programs Board. The event is open to the general public, and tickets, available at Ticketron and Teletron outlets, are $5.
