Heavily favored China scored an easy victory over Tunisia, while Japan, Cuba and the Soviet Union also won on the opening day of the World Cup Women’s Volleyball Championships at Tokyo, Japan.
China, winner of the 1981 World Championships and a 1984 L.A. Olympic gold medal, had little trouble rolling over Tunisia in straight sets, 15-0, 15-2, 15-1.
Cuba beat South Korea, 15-3, 15-13, 15-11; the Soviet Union routed Brazil, 15-0, 15-10, 5-15, 15-12, and Japan beat Peru, 15-10, 15-5, 15-10.
The round-robin competition by eight women’s team will be followed by the men’s championships beginning Nov. 22.
