Gunmen ambushed a soldier returning home in Northern Ireland. Police in Londonderry said that at least two assailants shot and killed a sergeant in his 50s. The man, who was not identified, was a member of a locally recruited regiment of the British army. No group immediately claimed responsibility. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, speaking in Parliament, defended the recently signed Anglo-Irish accord, saying it “offers hope to all those in both communities who want to defeat the men of violence and want to work together peacefully for a better future for their children.”
