PARANOIA U.S.A.

Thanks to Lewis Beale for his intelligent and well-researched analysis of the paranoia currently invading our movie theaters (“Strange Love: Pandering to the Paranoia,” Nov. 17). And thanks, also, to the Calendar editors for featuring this important subject as a cover story.
The obsession with an enemy with which these films are so preoccupied is obviously not a problem of the film industry alone; it is a national sickness.
Hopefully, with the help of critical thinkers such as Beale, we can learn to recognize the fear and projection of negativity in our political leaders as well as in ourselves--the first step in alleviating the illness.
As far as the entertainment industry is concerned, we ought to take back our power. A film maker can only exploit us if we agree to buy their tickets.
