Record Holiday Mail Nets $311 Million

WASHINGTON — A record 11.9 billion pieces of mail during the Christmas mailing season brought the Postal Service a $311-million holiday bonus, the service said Monday.
The money, which will be used to offset future revenue shortfalls, brings the Postal Service’s current operating surplus to $479 million.
The figures cover the period Nov. 23 to Dec. 20, the standard four-week postal accounting period. Total holiday mail in 1985 was up 360 million pieces from 1984, the Postal Service said.
