Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang said that China will no longer conduct atmospheric nuclear tests. “China has not conducted nuclear tests in the atmosphere for many years and will no longer conduct atmospheric nuclear tests in the future,” Zhao said at a Peking rally marking the International Year of Peace. China exploded its first nuclear bomb in 1964 but is believed to have conducted no above-ground testing since 1980.
