Newport Magic Club Damaged by Fire

Firefighters had to break through a locked steel door to fight a blaze of unknown origin at Magic Island Inc., a private Newport Beach nightclub that was closed at the time the fire broke out, a Fire Department spokeswoman said. The blaze was reported just before 10 p.m. and was confined to the first floor of the three-story building at 3700 Newport Blvd. in Lido Marina Village. The fire was controlled in about 30 minutes. No injuries were reported. An investigator was working at the scene trying to determine the cause. It was not immediately known what days the club is open. A Chapter 11 petition was filed on behalf of the club for protection from its creditors nearly a year ago. The 5-year-old club, devoted to the magical arts, listed debts of more than $4.1 million and assets of about $2.4 million in the petition last year.
