Health officials are warning the state’s 20,000 dry cleaning workers not to breathe fumes from perchloroethylene (PCE), a cancer-causing chemical commonly used as a degreasing solvent. The hazard alert, issued by Cal/OSHA, may lead to tighter industrial regulation. However, the action comes only a few weeks before the South Coast Air Quality Management District is scheduled to consider relaxing PCE emission rules because the chemical does not contribute to smog.
