Yuri Syedikh of the Soviet Union bettered his own world record in the hammer throw with a toss of 284 feet 4 inches, the official news agency Tass said. Syedikh set the old mark of 283-3 in 1984.
He set the latest record in a dual meet between the Soviet Union and East Germany in the Soviet city of Tallinn.
