The Netherlands’ coalition Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers, was sworn in after it approved a package of austerity measures. Lubbers’ Christian Democrats and the right-wing Liberals retained their majority in May elections, but negotiations to renew their alliance have just concluded. The Cabinet team completed work on next year’s budget--calling for continued public spending cuts to assist the Dutch economy--before being sworn in officially by Queen Beatrix in The Hague.
