NEWPORT, R.I. — A gunman forced his way into a mansion in this wealthy resort community today, tied up eight people, sexually assaulted one of them and made off with more than $1 million in cash and jewelry, police said.
The suspect fled the Summer Wind Estate in a taxicab but was arrested a few hours later in downtown Providence, said Newport Lt. Edward Sullivan. The suspect, whom police refused to identify, was to be arraigned later today on a variety of felony counts, Sullivan said. Providence police recovered most of the cash and jewelry, he said.
