Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammed’s multiracial coalition was returned to power by a landslide margin in parliamentary elections over the weekend, the Elections Commission announced. Mahathir’s National Front coalition won 148 seats in the 177-seat Parliament. The opposition Democratic Action Party won 24 seats, and the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party won just one, the Elections Commission said. Mahathir’s coalition also was returned to power in all 11 state assemblies, capturing more than two-thirds of the seats in each, the commission said.
