More Farms Eligible for Disaster Relief

WASHINGTON — Agriculture Secretary Richard E. Lyng declared Georgia and parts of Virginia, which have been hard hit by the record drought in the Southeast, as natural disaster areas Thursday, making farmers eligible for emergency relief.
The designation applies to the entire state of Georgia and to 34 counties in Virginia, and will allow eligible farmers to receive emergency loans from the Farmers Home Administration.
Lyng already has declared other counties in Virginia and parts of five other states--Alabama, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina and South Carolina--as drought disaster areas.
