Olympic gold-medal cyclist Alexi Grewal won’t be in the Coors International bicycle race because he has been dropped from the 7-Eleven team and probably can’t get on another team, according to 7-Eleven team manager John Ochowicz.
“There were quite a number of factors in the selection process, but Alexi’s behavior in the Tour de France weighed heavily in the decision,” Ochowicz said. “His behavior was unacceptable.”
During the Tour de France, Grewal spat at a CBS cameraman who rode too closely to him, and the incident was televised worldwide. Grewal was not available for comment.
The decision to take Grewal off the team, substituting Eric Heiden in his place, “has nothing to do with Alexi’s riding,” said Grewal’s manager, Len Pettyjohn. “It probably has everything to do with decorum.”
