Former Ram Coy Bacon Shot When He Answers Knock at His Apartment Door

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Former Ram defensive end Coy Bacon, facing charges for cocaine possession, was shot in the stomach early Friday when he answered a knock at the door of his suburban Washington apartment, police said.

Bacon, 42, who also played for the Washington Redskins and the San Diego Chargers, was reported in critical condition at the Washington Hospital Center after three hours of surgery to repair a single bullet wound.

The Montgomery County Police said they had established no motive and had no suspects in the shooting, two weeks after police arrested Bacon on the drug charges. He was freed on his recognizance.

Bacon’s injury was not considered life-threatening, a spokeswoman for the Washington Hospital Center said.

“He was alone in the apartment when he answered a knock at the door” at about 12:15 a.m., a Montgomery County Police spokeswoman said. “One shot was fired when he opened the door.”

The assailant fled, and Bacon went to a neighbor for help.
