Fluor Corp. of Irvine may lose a $2.5-million contract to manage the renovation of the Los Angeles Convention Center because the company’s dealings in South Africa conflict with the city’s anti-apartheid policy.
That new policy prohibits the city--in contracts not subject to competitive bidding--from doing business with the government of South Africa or with firms that do business there.
Fluor’s international construction and engineering operations did about $40 million in business in South Africa last year, less than 1% of the company’s $42-billion annual revenue.
The Los Angeles City Council’s Revenue and Finance Committee voted unanimously to oppose the Convention Center Commission’s selection of Fluor. On Tuesday, the commission’s president, Sandra Gordon, said she expects the panel will go along with the council members’ vote and find a new contractor to oversee the $310-million expansion.
