Gov. George Deukmejian is reconsidering his veto of legislation to protect AIDS victims from discrimination and may sign a similar measure before the Legislature adjourns in two weeks, it was reported. The proposed measure would protect AIDS victims from employment and housing discrimination in California. Assemblyman Art Agnos (D-San Francisco), author of the original bill, was reportedly preparing to move the revised version through the Legislature before its Aug. 29 adjournment. The Republican governor has been widely criticized for his veto of the AIDS bill and for failing to take an immediate stand on a November ballot initiative, backed by supporters of political extremist Lyndon LaRouche, to restrict activities of AIDS victims. The Legislature introduced about 40 AIDS-related bills this year and the new state budget has $28.7 million earmarked for research and treatment of acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
