Olympic gold medalist Steve Hegg of Dana Point set an amateur cycling world record of 4 minutes 37.614 seconds in the 4,000-meter time trial at Colorado Springs, Colo.
In a tuneup meet for the 1986 World Cycling Championships to be held at the same site starting Aug. 27, Hegg broke the mark of 4:37.687 set by Victor Koupouetese of the Soviet Union in 1983.
Rebecca Twigg Whitehead of Montrose, an Olympic silver medalist, broke the 500-meter record with a time of 30.642 seconds.
