A woman and her infant granddaughter drowned after they abandoned their car when it became inundated by a surging creek in Newberry, S.C. The torrents washed out city streets and left up to 10 feet of water in some houses, and about a dozen people had to be rescued from low-lying areas, officials said. State Climatologist John Purvis said 10.4 inches of rain were dumped on the area within a 24-hour period.
