The Labor Department proposed new regulations to allow employees in six industries to work in their homes if the employers get a government certificate. The industries are women’s apparel, jewelry manufacturing, gloves and mittens, buttons and buckle manufacturing, handkerchief manufacturing and embroideries. Labor Secretary William E. Brock III said there will be a 60-day period for public comment after the proposed rules are published in the Federal Register. The International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union vowed to fight the department’s plan.
