Top-seeded Mats Wilander of Sweden and No. 2-seeded Jimmy Connors scored victories Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the $375,000 Assn. of Tennis Professionals Championship at Mason, Ohio.
Wilander beat Horacio de la Pena of Argentina, 6-3, 6-2, while Connors turned back Jonathan Canter, 6-4, 6-4.
In other matches, Kevin Curren upset No. 4-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden, 6-7, 6-1, 7-6, Tim Wilkison beat Jonas D. Svenson of Sweden, 6-4, 6-2, and No. 7-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain defeated Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, 7-6, 6-4.
Rain forced the postponement of third-round matches in the $150,000 United Jersey Bank tournament at Mahwah, N.J.
