WELL-BRED RESTRAINT

“NEVER FELT SO GOOD.” James Ingram. Qwest. Low-key and congenial, Ingram is kind to good material. He doesn’t overwhelm it or oversing it. He’s the very picture of well-bred restraint, whether it’s on a yearning, pop-laced romancer like “Just Once” or on a mid-tempo message tune like “Ya Mo Be There.” Nothing here is really on the instant, stick-in-your-memory level of some of Ingram’s past hits--though “Love’s Been Here and Gone,” which Ingram co-wrote with the under-appreciated Leon Ware, echoes the dreamy sensuality of songs Ware wrote for Marvin Gaye’s 1976 “I Want You” album.
