The Nation : Heavy Rains Soak Texas
Thunderstorms drenched Texas with up to eight inches of rain, pushing streams over their banks, flooding roads and homes and forcing 50 residents to flee to higher ground. Heavy rain stretched from Louisiana and southern Arkansas across eastern and southern Texas, the National Weather Service said. In south-central Texas, eight inches of rain that fell upstream on the Blanco River washed downstream, burying low-water crossings in San Marcos under six to seven feet of water, said Hays County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Squires. Fifty people in Travis County, south of Austin, were evacuated to a Red Cross shelter at a junior high school. Floodwaters were waist high in mobile homes.
