Pacific 10 Roundup : Adams, Jenkins Sharp as Arizona Romps, 37-3

Tailback David Adams rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Alfred Jenkins threw for three more scores as Arizona opened its season with a 37-3 nonconference victory over Houston Saturday night at Tucson.

The 5-foot-6, 170-pound Adams had 20 carries and scored on runs of seven and two yards.

Split end Jon Horton caught 6 passes for 115 yards, with 46 yards coming on a pass play touchdown from Jenkins.

Arizona’s big-play defense stifled Houston all night long, coming up with a safety, a fumble recovery and three interceptions--one of which led to the Wildcats’ first touchdown, a nine-yard pass from Jenkins to wide receiver Derek Hill.

Jenkins also hit fullback Charles Webb with a five-yard scoring pass to give Arizona a 23-0 lead.

Placekicker Chip Browndyke booted a 22-yard field goal for Houston’s only score as the half ended at 23-3.

Washington St. 34, Nevada Las Vegas 14--In his first collegiate start, Cougar quarterback Ed Blount passed for two touchdowns and ran 14 yards on a draw for another at Pullman, Wash.

Blount’s first pass, to Kitrick Taylor, was good for an eight-yard touchdown.

On Washington State’s next possession, a 63-yard run by Steve Broussard and a 15-yard penalty against the Rebels for tackling Broussard out of bounds set up Blount’s 14-yard scoring run.

Cougar strong safety Ron Collins made it 21-0 late in the first quarter with a 71-yard interception return.

Blount, a fifth-year senior, was shaken up in the third quarter and replaced by redshirt freshman Timm Rosenbach. Just before departing, Blount threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Victor Wood for a 31-7 lead. An apparent nine-yard touchdown run by Blount one play earlier was called back because of a holding penalty.

Oregon 21, San Jose St. 14--Junior safety Anthony Newman fell on a mishandled punt snap for a fourth-quarter touchdown to give the Ducks a nonconference victory at San Jose.

Newman outraced punter Tom Diehl to the loose ball in the end zone with 12:42 to play after Diehl failed to handle a low snap from center. Quarterback Chris Miller then hit J.J. Birden on a two-point conversion pass for the final points of the game.
