George Nicolau, 61, was selected as baseball’s new arbitrator by labor representatives of the owners and players.
Nicolau’s was the only name remaining on a list of seven arbitrators compiled for consideration by the American Arbitration Assn.
Donald Fehr, executive director of the Players Assn., and Barry Rona, executive director of management’s Player Relations Committee, took turns crossing names off the list until only Nicolau remained.
The first case Nicolau will hear is the San Diego Padres’ suspension of pitcher Rich (Goose) Gossage. The union filed a grievance last week against the action the Padres took Aug. 29.
